- GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting your brand mentioned, cited and recommended in answers from AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode and AI Overviews.
- GEO differs from SEO in its unit of success: SEO counts rankings and clicks, while GEO counts brand mentions, cited links and how accurately the answer describes you.
- A practical GEO program starts with a fixed set of buyer questions, clear entity signals, a crawlable site and independent mentions, measured monthly with Search Console’s AI report, GA4 referrals and a manual prompt test.
Your CEO forwarded an article about GEO and asked whether the team is “doing it.” Or an agency pitched “ChatGPT optimization” that looked a lot like your SEO retainer. It is hard to tell which parts are new and which are renamed.
As of October 2026, there is enough data to answer that. Google now reports AI impressions in Search Console, ChatGPT changed the sources it cites in August, and one study found that ChatGPT settles part of its brand recommendations before it searches. Together they are enough to build a seven-step program.
What is GEO in one sentence?
GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the practice of making AI engines recognize your brand, mention it in their answers and cite your pages as sources. The engines that matter for most B2B companies are ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google’s reach matters here: in October 2025 it expanded AI Mode to 36 more languages and over 200 countries and territories, and said users ask questions two to three times longer there than in regular search.
You will also hear AEO, AI search optimization and LLM optimization for largely the same work. The test is simple: when a buyer asks “Which accounting firms in Manchester specialize in e-commerce?”, does your company appear, and how is it described?
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO aims for a page to rank and earn the click, while GEO aims for your brand to be named and cited inside an answer an AI engine writes, often with no click at all. GEO sits on top of SEO: a site that crawls poorly and lacks clear answers struggles in both.
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rankings and traffic to the site | Mentions, citations and recommendations in AI answers |
| Unit of success | Ranking position and the click | Brand named, link cited, business described accurately |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, user experience, crawlability | Entity recognition, independent mentions, clear answer blocks, access for AI crawlers |
| Measurement | Search Console, GA4, rank trackers | Search Console’s AI report, AI referrals in GA4, manual prompt test |
The pressure comes from the click. Ahrefs found that an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower average click-through rate for top-ranking pages, comparing December 2025 with December 2023 across 300,000 keywords. A top ranking still earns visibility, and less of it turns into a visit.
What changed for GEO in 2026?
In 2026 GEO moved from guesswork to data: Google started reporting AI impressions, ChatGPT changed its sources, and a first study showed the model holds a brand shortlist before it searches.
Google introduced generative AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026 and completed the worldwide rollout on 31 August 2026. They show impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features by page, country and date, with no click data yet.
In mid-August 2026, ChatGPT cut its Reddit citations by 73.4%, while official brand and competitor pages gained citations in 10 of 15 brand reports tracked by OtterlyAI. Reddit citations in Google, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity stayed roughly flat, so each engine has its own source mix.
In September 2026, a summary of network-capture research found that brands ChatGPT wrote into its first search query were named in 68.9% of answers, against 2.1% for brands it only found in the results. It is one study with no published sample size, and it explains why companies that rank well on Google can be absent from ChatGPT.
How do you start with GEO? Seven steps for a business
Start with the questions you want to appear for, fix your entity signals and your site, then build independent mentions and measure every month. After the first month, steps two to five run in parallel.
Step 1: Build a fixed question set
Write 20 to 30 questions buyers ask before they buy, in their words, such as “How much does outsourced bookkeeping cost for a SaaS startup?” You test, write and measure against this list. The manual protocol, with a ready test log, is in our guide on how to check whether you appear in AI Mode.
Step 2: Make your brand a clear entity
Write one description sentence with your name, category, audience and market, and use it on your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, review profiles and directories. Add Organization schema with sameAs links to those profiles. Our piece on how ChatGPT picks brands explains why: the model draws on what it already knows about you before it searches.
Step 3: Make your site readable for machines
The first requirement of an LLM-friendly website is key content delivered as server-rendered HTML text, with services, pricing and service areas written outside images. Confirm that robots.txt allows the AI crawlers you want. Also check Search Console’s new setting that excludes a property from Google’s AI surfaces: Google says it is not used as a ranking signal elsewhere in Search, and while it is on, your pages stay out of Google’s AI answers.
Step 4: Write answers that can be quoted
Answer each page’s question in the first one or two sentences, then expand. Question-shaped headings, first-party data and named, dated facts make a page easier to cite, and the Citation Probability Scorecard checks a page against four of these levers. The first sentence under each heading has to stand on its own, because that is the easiest part for an engine to lift.
Step 5: Earn independent mentions
According to Dehnel’s summary, the researcher Suganthan Mohanadasan concluded that digital PR is the biggest lever for getting into a model’s background knowledge. Build one original data asset, such as a benchmark or index, and pitch it to trade media, newsletters and podcasts. Keep review profiles current and ask customers to publish case studies on their own sites.
Step 6: Treat Google and ChatGPT as separate channels
Since the engines draw on different sources, run your question set in each one, record which domains each cites in your category, and build presence where each engine looks.
Step 7: Measure monthly and fix three things
Run the question set, review the AI report and referral data, compare with last month and pick three fixes. Part of a model’s knowledge changes only when the model is updated, so the monthly trend tells you more than any single check.
How do you measure GEO?
Measure GEO in three layers: impressions in Google’s AI answers through Search Console, referral traffic from AI engines in GA4, and a manual prompt test for mentions and citations in each engine.
Search Console’s generative AI report is the first official source for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover impressions, though it has no clicks yet and sites with few AI impressions may see no report. In GA4, a custom channel group or a filter on session source can isolate visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. That undercounts, since some people read the answer and search for the brand separately, so track branded queries in Search Console alongside it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
The terms overlap almost entirely. AEO, answer engine optimization, is often used for optimizing toward direct answers, and GEO for visibility in generative engines such as ChatGPT and AI Mode. The work is nearly identical: clear answers at the top of each page, consistent entity signals, mentions in independent sources and tracking of mentions and citations over time.
Does GEO replace SEO?
GEO builds on SEO and extends it. A site that Google cannot crawl well, or that lacks clear answers, will struggle to appear in AI answers too. What changes is the order of priorities: more weight on entity signals and independent mentions, and measurement that tracks mentions and citations alongside rankings and clicks.
How do you rank in ChatGPT?
You get into ChatGPT’s answers by becoming a brand the model already associates with your category, then giving it clear pages to confirm and cite. The association comes from consistent entity signals and independent coverage, and your own pages help once the model searches to check you.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Plan for several months. Fixes to your site and descriptions can affect answers that rely on live search within weeks. Independent mentions build over a quarter or more, and part of a model’s knowledge changes only when the model is updated. Judge the first quarter by direction, using a monthly comparison of the same question set.
What should you do first?
Write your question set and run it once in ChatGPT and AI Mode before you change anything on your site. The result shows who appears in your category today and which sources get cited, which tells you whether to start with the site, the entity work or mentions. If you want help building the program and its measurement, that is what our search and AI visibility service does.
