- As of October 2026, ChatGPT ads run in the US, eight further markets including the UK, and 31 European markets, with CPM or CPC bidding, conversion optimization and self-serve Ads Manager in Europe. OpenAI has not listed Israel as an ad market.
- Ads show only to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users see no ads, so a B2B buyer on a company plan sees only the organic answer.
- For most B2B companies, ChatGPT ads work as a bounded test aimed at Free and Go users with commercial intent, while the earned mention in the organic answer remains the asset that reaches every plan.
Your leadership team saw the headlines about ads in ChatGPT and asked whether you should be there. You already have paid search that works and content that pays back slowly.
As of October 2026, OpenAI has published enough about markets, targeting and measurement to plan a real test. It has also published who will never see those ads, and for B2B that detail decides most of the budget question. Everything below comes from OpenAI’s own pages; where OpenAI is silent, we say so.
Where can you run ChatGPT ads as of October 2026?
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT ads are available in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea and 31 European markets. OpenAI began testing ads in the US on 9 February 2026, and on 18 August 2026 announced that ChatGPT ads would expand to 31 European countries, after adding eight markets beyond the US in the previous six months.
| Market | What OpenAI announced | Date |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Ads test begins for logged-in adults on Free and Go | 9 Feb 2026 |
| Canada, Australia, New Zealand | Pilots to start “in the coming weeks” | 26 Mar 2026 |
| UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea | Expansion planned, then launched | 7 May and 11 Aug 2026 |
| 31 European markets, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria | Expansion announced, then self-serve Ads Manager opened in all 31 | 18 Aug and 31 Aug 2026 |
| Israel | Not listed in OpenAI’s announcements | As of Oct 2026 |
The dates for the first eight markets come from the update notes on OpenAI’s test announcement. The European announcement names only nine of the 31 countries, so confirm your target country in Ads Manager before planning.
How do ChatGPT ads work: formats, bidding and measurement?
ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements inside conversations, labeled and visually separated from the answer, bought on CPM or CPC with an option to optimize toward conversions. OpenAI says ads are “clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the organic answer” and that more formats and buying models will follow. It has not published a detailed format specification.
In its European announcement, OpenAI says it expanded beyond CPM and CPC bidding to support conversion optimization, added geo-targeting and custom audiences, and extended measurement beyond clicks through the OpenAI Pixel, a Conversions API and third-party integrations. Sales started through OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team and partners; self-serve Ads Manager opened across the 31 European markets on 31 August 2026. New advertisers start at ads.openai.com.
Two eligibility rules matter. OpenAI does not show ads in accounts where the user says or OpenAI predicts they are under 18, and ads are not eligible near sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health or politics. A healthtech company should expect limited inventory around its core topics.
OpenAI also states that advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s answers, so the paid slot and the organic answer need separate plans. If you already run ads in Google AI Mode, the logic is familiar: the ad sits next to an answer you cannot buy.
Who sees ChatGPT ads, and why does that matter for B2B?
Only logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans see ChatGPT ads; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users do not. OpenAI states this in its test announcement and repeats for Europe that “Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions will remain ad-free“.
This is the core B2B consideration. A procurement lead researching vendors on a company ChatGPT Enterprise seat sees only the organic answer. A founder of a ten-person firm on a personal Free account can see your ad. The paid audience skews toward small companies, freelancers and early research on personal accounts, while organizations that have rolled out paid ChatGPT plans sit outside paid reach.
OpenAI does not publish a split of users by plan, so ask your sales team which prospects use ChatGPT at work and on which plan. If your pipeline is mostly large enterprises, many buyers will only meet you in the organic answer.
Should a B2B company pay for ChatGPT ads or earn the mention?
Pay for the slot when your buyers use Free or Go in a market where ads run and the query has clear commercial intent; invest in the earned mention everywhere else, because it reaches all plans and all countries. This is the decision framework we use with clients.
| Situation | Paid slot | Earned mention |
|---|---|---|
| Buyers are enterprise teams on ChatGPT Business or Enterprise | Low value: no ads on these plans | Primary channel |
| Buyers are SMB owners, freelancers or consultants on personal accounts | Worth a bounded test | Still needed for comparison queries |
| You sell into the US, UK or a listed European market | Available now | Available |
| You sell only in Israel | Not available per OpenAI’s announcements | The only option |
| Your category is health or another sensitive topic | Limited near sensitive topics | Primary channel |
| New product with no third-party coverage yet | Buys visibility while coverage builds | Slow to build, compounds |
| You need attributable pipeline this quarter | Measurable via Pixel and Conversions API | Harder to attribute |
The earned side depends on how ChatGPT forms its shortlist. One study summarized by Tom Dehnel found that brands present in ChatGPT’s initial search query were recommended in 68.9% of answers, against 2.1% for brands found only in retrieved results. It is a single study, and its direction is clear: third-party mentions and entity recognition decide whether you are in the answer before any ad appears. We cover the mechanism in how ChatGPT picks which brands to recommend.
How do you run a 30-day ChatGPT ads test?
Run one campaign in one listed market for 30 days, with conversion tracking installed before launch and a success metric agreed in advance.
In week one, install the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API and confirm events fire for the action you care about, such as a demo request. Record a baseline cost per demo from Google Search and LinkedIn in the same market, and run your 20 key buyer questions in ChatGPT to note where you already appear organically.
In week two, launch on CPC bidding and geo-target the one market where your pipeline is strongest, such as the UK or Germany. Keep creative plain and specific; generic claims look thin next to a detailed answer.
In weeks three and four, switch to conversion optimization once there are enough tracked conversions to learn from, and compare cost per qualified lead against your baseline. Check lead quality with sales before judging cost: a cheap lead from a solo user may be worth less than an expensive one from a mid-market team.
At day 30 you have a cost per qualified lead and a record of organic presence on the same questions: enough to scale, pause or move the budget into earning the mention.
Frequently asked questions
How do I advertise on ChatGPT?
Create an account in OpenAI’s Ads Manager through ads.openai.com, which OpenAI made self-serve across 31 European markets on 31 August 2026. Before that, access ran through OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team and partners. Install the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API before launch so you can optimize toward conversions and measure beyond clicks.
Are ChatGPT ads available in Israel?
Israel is not listed in OpenAI’s ad announcements as of October 2026. The listed markets are the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea and 31 European countries. An Israeli company selling abroad should check in Ads Manager whether it can advertise into those markets, and build organic visibility for Israeli buyers.
Do ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise users see ads?
According to OpenAI, they do not. Ads show only to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans, and Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans stay ad-free. For B2B marketers, buyers using ChatGPT through a company plan see only the organic answer, which makes earned mentions essential.
Do ChatGPT ads influence the organic answer?
OpenAI states that advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s answers and that ads are labeled and separated from the answer. Buying ads will not get your brand recommended in the response. To appear in the answer you need the signals ChatGPT uses to build its shortlist, such as third-party coverage and a clearly recognized brand entity.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
OpenAI has not published CPC benchmarks or a minimum spend on its announcement pages. It confirms CPM and CPC bidding plus conversion optimization, so cost depends on your bids and competition. Treat third-party cost figures as unconfirmed, set a fixed 30-day test budget and compare the cost per qualified lead with your existing channels.
Where should a B2B team start?
Start with where your buyers meet ChatGPT and on which plan. Enterprise buyers point to the organic answer first; smaller buyers in the US, UK or Europe make a 30-day paid test cheap information. For a second opinion on the split for your market, our consulting team can map it with you before you commit budget.
